The Process of my Bedroom Makeover

It’s makeover time! I want to share with you my process and some tips when painting furniture and walls.

Painting the dresser

First, I had to disassemble the dresser and my dad helped me with this. We unscrewed the drawers, carried everything downstairs and into the garden. You should have someone to help you with this. Before sanding I also unscrewed the handles. Then I started sanding everything. You can see in this picture the sanding looks a bit messy. To avoid this I would recommend using a sanding block.

After sanding, I wiped off the dust but I should have made sure all of the dust was wiped off because it showed up a bit in the paint. I recommend using a tack cloth.

I decided to use white paint for the dresser. I started painting the first layer using a brush and my mom also helped paint with a brush. This took a while and it did not look great because it was uneven and grainy. After letting it dry, we sanded it to make it even and wiped off the dust afterwards. Then I painted the second layer, this time I used a mini-roller. This worked better, except you cannot paint the sides very easily however we already did this with the brush so it worked out fine. While this was drying I painted the handles and we decided to use the same light blue grey for the wall. After everything was dry we assembled it back together and I am very happy with the results!

Painting the walls of my room

Now it is time to paint the walls of my room and my parents helped me with this. First we moved some furniture out of my room to make space. We covered my bed with plastic to avoid it getting dirty. Then we taped the floor, door frame and window frame using masking tape. We also used masking tape with plastic to avoid paint splashes on the floor.

Finally it was time to start painting. We opened the paint can with a screwdriver and mixed the paint well using a wooden mixing stick. Then we poured the paint into a painting tray. First, my dad painted the sides of the walls using a paint brush because you cannot paint this with a roller. Then I painted the rest of the wall using a paint roller.

When rolling the paint roller into the paint tray it is important to spread the paint evenly. Instead of rolling back and forth in the paint tray, it is better to roll in one direction. Roll the paint roller up and down the wall and sideways. Do not start painting on the side of the wall because it is hard to spread the paint there. Also be careful when rolling on the side because you do not want splashes of paint on another wall.

After we had been painting for a while we realised the paint was almost finished and we still had to paint three quarters of the walls. So we quickly went to get more paint and had a break. To keep the paint damp, we wrapped the paint tray, roll and brush in plastic foil. It is better to check how much paint you need before painting but you don’t want to buy too much paint either.

After painting three walls white we still had to paint the last wall in a light blue grey colour. We cleaned the tray, roller and brush as much as we could using some cloth. Do not wash it off with water in the sink because the paint is bad for the water drain.

We started painting the last wall and we had to be more careful when painting the side because we did not put any tape. Then we ran out of paint again but we decided to continue the next day. After letting the paint dry for a bit, I took off the tape which I found very satisfying.

The next day we painted the last bit. I was happy we finally finished painting and it was a lot more exhausting than I thought. I was also nervous, exited and curious for what my room would look like once everything was back in my room.

Setup

Afterwards we cleaned everything up. We poured the water into the empty paint can. After a while the water will evaporate and leave behind the paint which can then be thrown away in the litter bin.

In the end I am very happy with the results. There were a few things I would have done differently if I would do it again. However, this was my first time painting and it is good to learn from mistakes. Hopefully you do not make the same mistakes I did. Stay tuned for my next posts as I will show the final results shortly.
